Able to Act
'KE LABALABELA HO BA….' (I aspire to be).
In February 2018, four professional Hijinx actors with Down’s Syndrome travelled to Lesotho, a country in Africa where disability is perceived as a curse. During the trip, young people from Lesotho joined the actors to create and perform ’KE LABALABELA HO BA….’ (I aspire to be), a small scale piece which toured cultural sites across Lesotho.
Hijinx’s decision to tour the country with a production involving learning disabled actors was a bold and courageous act. It was a new experience for the actors from Wales and everyone involved in the production. It performed to over 1750 Basotho people with a resounding success and ultimately recognised in Hijinx winning the International Award from The Stage (2019).
The visit was been made possible through funding from Welsh Government’s Wales for Africa programme through Hub Cymru Africa, the British Council, and in association with Machabeng College, Dolen Cymru/Wales Africa Link and Phelisanong Children’s Centre.
