Jon Dafydd-Kidd, Head of Participation here at Hijinx, is running an Ultra Marathon with 60 obstacles on 11 June 2022 to raise £3,000 for PAWB, our community and outreach work.

Here's why.

There are 54,000 people in Wales with a learning disability and 9/10 have been the victim of hate/mate crime. Those with learning disabilities generally leave school without the qualifications needed to access further education or work.

We are the change makers.

Hijinx are leaders in inclusive theatre with and for neurodivergent people. We facilitate a Wales-wide inclusive community programme called PAWB, which provides opportunities for 70 neurodivergent and neurotypical adults and young people who perform together as equal partners. This includes:

  • Odyssey – our community theatre group
  • Telemachus and North Young People’s Theatre – our two young people’s theatre groups (the only young people’s theatre in Wales for neurodivergent people aged 16-24)
  • Two Drama Foundations – teaching life skills through drama to 30 people with complex learning disabilities
  • Vaguely Artistic – our in-house inclusive band

For members of PAWB, taking part in weekly sessions and performing in Hijinx productions, like our annual Odyssey Christmas show at Wales Millennium Centre, is an invaluable experience. This has been particularly vital during COVID-19, which has seen the levels of social isolation worsen. For many of our participants, during lockdown PAWB sessions were the highlight of their week:

“[Hijinx] has helped me in lockdown to feel less lonely… If I hadn’t had Hijinx, lockdown would have felt different in a bad way.” (Hijinx participant)

As things return to ‘normal’, there is a real risk that those often excluded by society become further excluded in the rush to rebuild, so it is vital that we continue to drive opportunities to level the playing field for people with learning disabilities and/or autism. But we can’t do this without your support.

To donate to PAWB in support of Jon’s fundraiser:
