A note from the writer, Hefin Robinson.

After such a strange, confusing and difficult time in all our lives, there is no denying that we could do with some laughter and escapism. However, isn’t it also important to reflect on what we’ve been through and consider how we emerge from this period of loss? That was the challenge of writing Odyssey’s first show since COVID turned the world upside down: to tell a story that is full of fun whilst never shying away from the darkness.

As always, ‘Pinocchio and the Northern Lights’ brings its own Odyssey twist to a familiar classic. Despite the added complication of Zoom, the participants once again approached the creative process with generosity, ingenuity and humour. From Gwyn the fearless penguin to Crystal Valley and its magical library, it is the group’s imagination that leaps off the script and onto the stage (and screen). I am deeply grateful to each and every one of them for bringing a shining light to those lockdown sessions.

With the festive season around the corner and a new year ahead, I hope this show brings equal moments of joy and reflection as we move forward into the next chapter of our lives.

A note from Head of Participation at Hijinx, Director & Producer of Pinocchio and The Northern Lights, Jon Dafydd-Kidd.

The journey of this show started in late 2019 – the original concept being very different to the piece you’ll enjoy today.
In Odyssey, we have a tradition of finding a challenge for the cast, to develop our skills and bring something new each year. Little did we know the world would already have that sorted for us this time: how to create theatre in a pandemic with a nearly 30 person cast! But unsurprisingly, the brilliant, determined and creative individuals we work with rose to the challenge.  It will come as no shock that throughout this process, the performers and creatives have asked the question: said ‘so, how can we adapt?’, and whether on stage or film, I’m sure you’ll agree each person shines.
Pinocchio and the Northern Lights will remain an important marker for the community that is Hijinx Odyssey, and for those who have become regular supporters of our performances. We could easily fill a library with the memories we’ve created with this showand the first 21 years of  Odyssey. And we know the Northern Lights shine a little bit brighter because of some of our friends
I’ve never been prouder to collaborate with our members; as a community, performers, and as friends.

Telemachus Pre-Show: Light from the Past (Glanfa Stage).

Our South young peope’s theatre group Telemachus will be performing Light from the Past before each performance of Pinocchio and The Northern Lights this week, on the Glanfa StageIt will then be available to watch online as part of the 12 Days of PAWB!

This year we have not one, but two exhibitions!

The University South Wales: Creative and Therapeutic Arts first years have been working with Odyssey developing facilitation skills, and facilitating creative workshops.

The first exhibition is outside the Weston Studio now, and showcases the work from some members of Hijinx PAWB.

From 14 December, the second exhibition will be located in the foyer of the Wales Millennium Centre, near the Silver Dragon. Here you’ll be able to purchase the artworks created by the USW cohort, inspired by the works of the first exhibition, Odyssey and Pinocchio and the Northern Lights

We are grateful for the financial support from...

We would also like to say a big thank you to...

Chapter, Wales Millennium Centre,  Creative and Therapeutic Arts USW Staff and Yr 1 Students, Norwegian Church, Caitlin Ellis and Chris Lloyd.

We are the change makers...

Hijinx changes the lives of our actors and participants.

73% of actors and participants said they felt happier since joining Hijinx.

We know the difference arts and theatre can have on people’s health and wellbeing. Our recent Social Impact Report demonstrates the social economic value we have on the arts, exploring the life changing stories of the people we work with. For every £1 invested in Hijinx we generate £4.84 of social value.

But we still need your help…

As a registered charity, we need money. We rely on the generosity of individuals, trust and foundations, businesses, and our family of amazing volunteers to pioneer, produce and promote opportunities in the arts and creative industries for people with learning disabilities and/or autism.

Here are two ways you can support us and what we do this December:

  1. 12 Days of PAWB – This December, Hijinx will bring together participants from PAWB, its pan-Wales community and training programme, to create, perform and engage online in the 12 Days of PAWB, a festive celebration of creativity. Across 12 dates there will be backstage interviews, workshops, clips from the last 12 months of activities and, most importantly of all, a fundraising opportunity. We are asking people to donate £12 via text. Text PAWB to 70580 to donate £12. This costs £12 plus a std rate message. We are aiming to raise £1,200 which will directly help our PAWB activity. Thank you.
  2. Odyssey Christmas Cards – Help to support Hijinx Odyssey community theatre group by buying our Christmas cards. Cards are £5 for a pack of 8, or £10 for 3 packs. It’s a great way to help us work towards our goal for an inclusive society.
