Unity 2011

Unity 2011 Poster

Our 2011 Festival took place over the week of 27th June at Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff. It was the first year we were able to apply for the all new Arts Council Wales Funding for Festivals scheme, which supported the festival to the tune of £50000. This, alongside continued support from Mencap Cymru, enabled us to programme an exciting and varied programme of both national and international performance.

Highlights in the Weston Studio included Danza Mobile (Spain) with the beautiful Dame Un Segundo and Anna Rothlizberger (Switzerland) with Pez Y Pescado, alongside our own touring show Old Hands and Uk based Mind the Gap with an stunning adaptation of Of Mice and Men.

2011 was the first year we ran a dedicated childrens day with performances from Taking Flight Theatre Company, About Face Theatre and our own Hijinx Pods.

The free performance programme featured outstanding shows from Marc Brew and DAC's Unusual Stage School with Mzansi Cymru. While the participation project was led by Cardiff and Denmarks own Denni Dennis, putting together a huantingly wonderful performances with 20 participants which included 6 Spanish performers from our friends Clownbaret and Clownfish. The peice titled Angels, is now available as one of our participation pods.

In 2011 we continued our partnership with Newport's Maindee Festival, presenting 5 seperate performances from Unity at this wonderful community festival, and in the process bringing inclusive performance to a truly new and culturally diverse audience (Ed - ouch that's very application speak!).

In all 5033 attended performances at Unity 2011 and 235 places were filled on our workshops and participation projects.

"There is so much going on and so much is FREE! Which is fantastic. There are so many amazing opportunities available at this festival"
