Hijinx wins Arts & Business Cymru’s 2016 Hospital Innovations Arts Award

Hijinx is delighted to have been awarded the prestigious Hospital Innovations Arts Award at this year’s Arts & Business Cymru 2016 awards ceremony held at the Wales Millennium Centre on Saturday 14th May.

The £2,500 cash prize award recognises the arts organisation or artist which has worked most creatively in partnership with business to maintain and develop activities and was awarded for the innovative work the company does in partnership with Western Power Distribution.

Hijinx has worked with Western Power Distribution since 2002. This partnership now addresses WPD’s training and community engagement objectives where actors from Hijinx’s Academies use their role play skills to give WPD staff a better understanding of the challenges and barriers that face some customers. In winning the award, the partnership received the most votes from the judges of all the 2016 nominations. The judges agreed ‘that is was a brilliant way of training business’ staff while giving valuable opportunities to Hijinx actors’.

Clare Williams, Chief Executive, Hijinx says: We are thrilled to have received this award which recognises the critically important work we are doing to find professional employment opportunities for learning disabled actors.

As well as training contact centre staff to better understand the needs of learning disabled and vulnerable customers, the partnership gives Hijinx Academy actors professional experience that further develops their skills. As well as working in Wales, has recently extended into other parts of the UK and has seen Hijinx deliver a 3-day training course to WPD staff in Derbyshire.

Western Power Distribution were also unanimous winners of the Arts, Business & Employees award for this successful partnership, in recognition of the integration of the arts into employee development while stimulating a more creative working environment. The judging panel agreed that ‘this was a truly exceptional partnership and the clear winner in this category’.
