Hijinx, in association with Blind Summit, present a brand new comedy theatre show Meet Fred which will be touring South Wales in February and March. Witty, poignant and full of laughs, it mixes puppetry and live performance by a cast of actors with and without learning disabilities
Fred is just a regular guy who wants to get on in life . He wants to find a job and settle down with a nice girl. The only problem is that Fred is a puppet, and that’s where his dependency issues start. Day to day life is tough when everything you do relies on three other guys being with you at all times.
Meet Fred is a comedy theatre show about an outsider trying to make his mark in a world in which he needs a lot of help. A hilarious ensemble performance devised by the Company, the star of the show is unarguably the two foot cloth puppet himself. Click here to see the trailer.
Hijinx’s Artistic Director, Ben Pettitt-Wade commented: “We have had huge amounts of fun developing Meet Fred over the past two years or so, playing with the concept of how life would be for a puppet living in the everyday. It has been a fantastic process that has created a memorable character and a performance that we hope will truly touch our audiences. We are excited to finally introduce Wales to Fred.”
Hijinx Academy members
Meet Fred’s cast includes professional actors with learning disabilities who train at Hijinx’s Cardiff-based Academy, an ongoing performance course for learning disabled performers. Since the first Academy opened in Cardiff in 2012, Hijinx have established a further three Academies in Prestatyn, Carmarthen and Cardiff , with a new mid-Wales Academy due to open in 2016.
Richard Newnham, an actor with Asperger’s and part of the Meet Fred cast said: “Being in the Meet Fred cast has been fantastic. When you work long enough you forget that Fred is a puppet. He is an actor who is always a pleasure to work with!”
Hijinx has created Meet Fred in association with puppetry experts Blind Summit. Meet Fred is brought about through the generous support of Arts Council of Wales, Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and The Rayne Foundation.
The show can be enjoyed by audiences of all abilities over the age of 12.
Hijinx, pioneers of inclusive theatre, produce theatre in which actors with and without disabilities work alongside each other as equal partners. Established over 30 years ago, the Cardiff-based company has been touring integrated shows- with casts of actors with and without learning disabilities - since 2006.
The cast of Meet Fred includes two actors with Asperger’s and one with Down Syndrome, who work as equals alongside four actors without learning disabilities.
