Peeling Away The Masks July 2006
Hijinx Outreach undertook a week long summer school with 25 participants from Bridgend People First in July culminating in a piece of mask theatre entitled, Peeling Away the Masks. The performance explored the issues of bullying with mainly young people with learning disabilities from Bridgend through drama, sign language and art.
People with learning disabilities are very often the victims of bullying and the performance explored the masks that are very often played. The main masked characters were the victim, bully, onlooker and doubter with other characters in plain neutral masks. All the masks were made by the art group who designed a character each for the main actors.
Nick Llewellyn, Outreach Officer and director of the piece said, "The week long process was a very interesting exploratory time with the participants where we truly investigated who the main characters were and what really lies beneath them. The participants did a fantastic job in relaying this to the audience with one member of the audience standing up after the show saying that it was the best performance that he had ever seen!"
The performance was narrated and signed by the sign language group, making the whole performance a truly visual journey for the audience who were invited to move about the stage in a semi - promenade fashion.
We have been invited back to perform this once again at a conference in November by the anti bullying team at Bridgend. This will be a fantastic opportunity for the piece to be shown to a wider audience as the piece really encapsulates the notion that people with learning disabilities are people first and foremost who have a voice that does need to be listened to.
