Outreach By The Seaside By The Sea!January 2006
Hijinx's Outreach Officer undertook four drama sessions before Christmas with Trinity Care Club near the sea in Porthcawl, South Wales. An earlier taster session last summer preceded the four sessions which was deemed successful and lots of fun so the group worked really hard over the summer to raise the funds to bring Hijinx back to the seaside. Trinity Care Club is a part time local day service for adults with a learning disability.
The sessions focussed on a variety of skills including communication, listening, eye contact and storytelling. Working through drama was a new experience for most of the group and some were hesitant at first but by the second session they seem to relish the idea of playing and really let go.
As many of the support staff from Trinity took part in the sessions, they not only began learning skills for themselves but are now able to use some of those skills in further work with the client group. Two staff members in a post workshop evaluation summed up the sessions:
"The skills taught during workshops were especially helpful for our client groups. The new friendships and contact with Hijinx will be valuable for all."
"Wonderful, we all had a great time and the workshops benefited us all. Staff, members and volunteers. Nick's become an honorary member of our care club we shall miss him on Thursdays."
